Reaching your 5th year of continuous legal residency in Portugal is a major milestone. Under Portuguese immigration legislation and European Union directives, third-country residents who have lived lawfully in the country for five years can apply for the Estatuto de Residente de Longa Duração (EU Long-Term Resident Card) or permanent residence.

A Long-Term Resident Card is valid for five years, eliminates the hassle of frequent annual visa renewals, and grants you full equal treatment in employment, education, and social protection across Portugal.

The Language Condition for Long-Term Residence

To qualify for the Long-Term Resident Card, Portuguese law requires applicants to demonstrate basic knowledge of European Portuguese at the CEFR A2 level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

You can verify this official requirement directly on the AIMA Official Immigration Portal and on the public services guide at ePortugal.gov.pt.

Why the Certified PLA Course is the Most Reliable Route

Established under Portaria n.º 183/2020 on Diário da República, the Português Língua de Acolhimento (PLA) course is specifically designed for international residents:

• Continuous Classroom Assessment: You earn your qualification through regular attendance and practical exercises, completely avoiding the anxiety of a single pass/fail exam.
• 90% Attendance Standard: Attending at least 90% of the 150 scheduled classroom hours guarantees you receive your accredited certificate upon successful completion.
• Official Recognition: Your certificate is registered directly in the national education database (SIGO), making it immediately verifiable by immigration case officers.

Planning Ahead for Your 5-Year Application

The 150-hour course generally takes between two to four months depending on whether you choose weekday or weekend classes. Completing your language qualification before your five-year residency date ensures your documentation is ready without procedural holdups.
