Arriving in Portugal without knowing the language can feel overwhelming at first. Everyday interactions—reading bills, asking for directions, or ordering food—can seem intimidating. But reaching Level A2 does not require years of study; it simply requires a clear, structured roadmap.
Under the Council of Europe CEFR Framework, Level A2 means you are an “Elementary User”—capable of understanding everyday expressions and handling routine communication.
Phase 1: Level A1 Fundamentals (Hours 1 to 75)
- Pronunciation and Sounds: Understanding European Portuguese rhythm, soft vowels, and nasal endings (-ão, -em).
- Everyday Vocabulary: Greetings, telling time, numbers, days of the week, and asking simple questions.
- Essential Verbs: Present tense forms of Ser, Estar, Ter, Ir, Querer, and Fazer.
Phase 2: Level A2 Communication (Hours 76 to 150)
- Describing Past Events: Learning the simple past tense (Pretérito Perfeito) to talk about your day, past work, and personal background.
- Practical Living: Interacting at public offices, clinics, pharmacies, supermarkets, and banks.
- Directions and Travel: Navigating public transport networks and asking for directions comfortably.
